George

George
Used as a typical first name to a man whose name is not yet known in Daughters of Mulberry, by Roger Longrigg and An Error of Judgement, by Pamela Hansford Johnson. In the first of these the tone is slightly aggressive; in the second it is friendly. There is a further friendly example in Lucky Jim, by Kingsley Amis. In J.B. Priestley’s The Good Companions a conversation between two men who do not know each other begins with one saying to the other: ‘Nice day, George.’ Priestley continues: ‘“Ay,” said Mr Oakroyd; and then, not to be outdone in this matter of handing out names, he added, dryly: “Nice enough, Herbert.” ‘“Ere,” said the man, straightening himself, “now I ask you.
Do I look like Herbert?”’ In private correspondence with the author, Professor W.F. Mainland reports that he was addressed as ‘George’ by Londoners in the 1930s.
